When Everly finally decides to fight back, things escalate very quickly and as the body count rises and the blood starts flowing like champagne, Everly keeps throwing surprise after surprise at the audience. She’s being held captive in a sex trafficking operation by a powerful mafia boss with the threat of her daughter’s safety being used to keep her from running. It’s a very simply plotted revenge thriller that, on paper, may not impress many, but really leaves an impression on filmgoers. Much like Nightcrawler, Cold in July was one of my top 10 films of 2014. And in case award accolades are part of your viewing criteria, Stranger by the Lake netted director Alain Guiraudie the Best Director award at 2013’s Cannes Film Festival. And while that synopsis alone screams, “been there, done that,” there are layers upon layers to these characters.Ĭinematically, Stranger by the Lake is breathtaking and you can virtually smell the suntan oil and sweat from your sofa. Franck, the film’s protagonist, starts falling for Michel, a man who turns out to be a bloodthirsty killer. The film revolves around a beach that is frequented by homosexual men. 2013’s twisted love story-cum-thriller Stranger by the Lake takes LGBT themes and packages them in an expertly crafted genre film that shines light on the fact that darkness exists in all walks of life. This decade has seen LGBT cinema explode out of the confines of the arthouse and into the mainstream. Along the way he picks up an associate in Rick (Riz Ahmed of HBO’s The Night Of) and a client in Nina (Rene Russo), along with a string of moral and ethical violations, all culminating in a breathless and tense finale that, like Gyllenhaal’s performance, must be seen to be believed. Nightcrawler’s plot revolves around Louis Bloom, a smooth talking creep who discovers that selling footage of grisly crime scenes and auto accidents is easy money.

But Nightcrawler is much more than a showcase for an actor at the top of his game – it’s a masterclass on how to make a perfect thriller.
It’s a performance that has to be seen to be believed as Gyllenhaal simultaneously chews scenery and exhales atmosphere from start to finish. Jake Gyllenhaal’s turn as Louis Bloom in 2014’s creepy psychological thriller Nightcrawler is a performance that will rank near the top of the actor’s filmography even 20 years from now. From the shockingly awful Suicide Squad to the downright boring Jason Bourne, this is truly a summer to forget! So in that spirit, this month’s best films on Netflix roundup features some of our absolute favorite films of the last couple years that just so happen to be available to stream right this very moment!
